Factchequeado is one of seven Latino-serving newsrooms nationwide selected by the Solutions Journalism Network for the 2026 Addressing Health Disparities Fellowship. This program is a year-long fellowship, which supports participating organizations in producing rigorous reporting on health equity through a solutions journalism approach.

Through the program, Factchequeado will receive a $14,000 grant, along with specialized training and mentorship to strengthen its coverage of health disparities affecting Latino communities. The fellowship also includes professional development for editors and journalists on how to report on healthcare issues through a solutions lens, engage audiences more effectively, and identify responses that are helping address systemic inequities in health outcomes. Ana María Carrano, our Managing Editor, and Jonnathan Pulla, one of our reporters, will be part of this cohort.

At Factchequeado, reporting on health misinformation and access to reliable health information has been a growing focus of our work. Latino communities in the United States face persistent disparities in healthcare access and outcomes, often shaped by structural factors such as language barriers, immigration status, economic inequality, and environmental conditions. At the same time, these communities are frequently targeted by health misinformation circulating on social media and messaging platforms.

Through this fellowship, our newsroom plans to expand its reporting focusing on responses that aim to reduce disparities in areas such as healthcare access, chronic disease prevention, culturally competent care, and community-based health initiatives.

Over the next 12 months, Factchequeado will work on producing solutions-focused stories that examine how communities, organizations, and institutions are working to address health disparities affecting Latino populations.

Participation in the fellowship will also allow Factchequeado to collaborate with other Latino-serving newsrooms across the United States as part of a community of practice: El Tecolote (Oakland/Bay Area), with Erika Carlos; Yale Climate Connections (national), with Perla Marvell; Shoresides (Wilmington, North Carolina), with Rend Smith; Tu Prensa Local (Long Island, New York/Suffolk County), with María del Mar Piedrabuena; Tucson Spotlight (Tucson, Arizona), with Diana Ramos; and Univision 23 (Dallas-Fort Worth), with Olga Gabriela Villegas.

As part of our collaborative model, the stories produced through the fellowship will be made available for free republication through our network of more than 140 allied organizations, including local and national media outlets, community organizations, and content creators that serve Latino audiences.

This initiative aligns with Factchequeado’s mission to provide reliable, contextualized information that helps Latino communities better understand the systems and issues that affect their lives.
