Factchequeado is proud to announce a new partnership with the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation to promote the responsible and inclusive use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the U.S, enabled by a $350,000 grant. This collaboration seeks to bridge the digital and informational divide of Latino communities through two complementary components that empower communities and strengthen Spanish local journalism.
“Access to trustworthy information is the cornerstone of an informed and empowered society. Factchequeado’s mission of advancing AI and media literacy in Spanish-speaking communities ensures that Latino journalists and audiences can navigate an evolving information landscape with confidence and agency. Our partnership reflects the Foundation’s commitment to building an inclusive digital future where no one is left behind", said Nick Cain, Vice President of Strategy & Innovation of Patrick J. McGovern Foundation.
“This partnership marks a key step in ensuring that Latino communities are not left behind in the AI revolution,” said Laura Zommer, CEO and Cofounder of Factchequeado. “By combining innovation, education, and equity, we’re building the foundation for a more inclusive digital future where Spanish-speaking audiences can both understand and benefit from AI technologies.”
FactDesafIA: Strengthening AI and Media Literacy in Latino Communities
FactDesafIA is a WhatsApp-based, gamified microlearning program that delivers AI and media literacy training in Spanish. Over five interactive days, participants learn to identify scams and deepfakes, understand AI-related risks, and use technology safely and creatively.
The program aims to reach 5,000 direct learners annually, with an indirect impact of more than 1,000,000 people through partnerships with 80+ Latino media outlets and 40+ grassroots organizations across 25 U.S. states and Puerto Rico. By using familiar platforms and relatable content, FactDesafIA ensures that AI education is accessible, practical, and culturally relevant.
Advancing AI-Driven Tools, Policies, and Workflows for Spanish-Language Newsrooms
Through one-year support for Factchequeado’s AI Innovation Lab, journalists, technologists, and community engagement experts will collaborate to test AI tools, conduct audience research, and pilot solutions designed specifically for Latino communities. Findings and innovations will be systematically documented and shared across Factchequeado’s network to accelerate collective learning and impact.
The program will also help 12 Spanish-language media outlets adopt AI responsibly through tailored workshops, mentorship, and grants to develop newsroom-specific AI policies and workflows.
Under the AI Tools for Sustainability component, six newsrooms will receive customized AI tools to enhance efficiency and strengthen journalism, while six others will focus on using AI for organizational sustainability. Newsrooms will be selected through a competitive open process to ensure diverse representation and equitable access.
Additionally, Factchequeado and its partners will co-create a new AI solution addressing newsroom gaps and audience needs. Activities will include needs assessments, prototype development, pilot testing, and iteration to ensure cultural and linguistic adaptation.
Together, these efforts strengthen both the demand side—Latino audiences navigating the information ecosystem—and the supply side—media outlets producing trustworthy, community-centered journalism in the channels where Latino audiences consume their news. The ultimate goal is to foster a more resilient and inclusive Spanish-language information ecosystem.
This collaboration underscores Factchequeado’s commitment to advancing AI for public good, fostering digital inclusion, and strengthening trust in Spanish-language journalism across the United States.
