Factchequeado, together with Datasketch, has been selected by the UNICEF Venture Fund as one of seven projects from six countries chosen from nearly 1,000 applicants across 87 countries. Each selected project will receive up to $100,000 in equity-free funding and a year of mentorship from UNICEF’s Office of Innovation (OOI) to test, develop, and scale innovative solutions to build digital trust.
For this initiative, Factchequeado is partnering with Datasketch, a Colombian start-upthat develops social technologies to make data accessible and actionable. Together, they are creating an AI-powered platform to provide migrant children and youth with reliable, verified information to help them navigate complex migration processes safely.
The Challenge:
Migrant children and young adults traveling to the United States face severe vulnerability to misinformation, which threatens their safety, legal status, and decision-making capacity. The lack of centralized, reliable Spanish-language information makes young migrants highly susceptible to scams and false guidance on immigration policies, rights, and services. They predominantly rely on platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and WhatsApp, where misinformation spreads rapidly through personal networks. The absence of Spanish-language fact-checking resources, coupled with low prioritization by technology companies, exacerbates the problem. The consequences are severe: youth may attempt illegal entry routes, lose money to scams, miss educational or legal opportunities, and face increased exposure to trafficking, abuse, or exploitation.
Our Approach:
The project focuses on three key objectives:
Deliver a youth-friendly AI Smart Search for reliable migration information.
Create interactive tools for digital literacy and misinformation detection.
Establish a community system for collaborative fact-checking.
The Platform Includes:
Smart Search Widget: Quickly connects youth with verified Spanish-language migration information on platforms they already use, such as TikTok.
Interactive Learning Tools: Gamified modules, quizzes, and multimedia explainers teach digital literacy and critical thinking skills.
Community Participation: Youth can flag misinformation, suggest improvements, and validate content collaboratively.
AI Chatbot & Data Tools: A conversational interface enables easy access to information and integrates data visualization for users without technical expertise.
Expected Impact:
By the end of the 12-month program, Factchequeado will launch a fully functional platform with interactive, verified resources and tools to help young migrants make informed decisions. The project empowers youth to share knowledge with their families, access guidance on visas and legal aid, and build resilience against misinformation—turning technology into both a protective resource and a bridge to trusted institutions.
“Happy to push forward our mission to make AI more accessible, equitable and trustworthy, now with a specific application to process data to tackle misinformation”, said Juan Pablo Marin Diaz, CEO de Datasketch.
