At Factchequeado, we proudly celebrate that our CEO and co-founder, Laura Zommer, has been honored by the Gabo Foundation with the 2025 Gabo Award for Journalistic Excellence. This prestigious recognition highlights her career, her unwavering commitment to truth, and her leadership in the fight against disinformation in Latin America and, more recently, in the United States.

Laura shares this honor with Brazilian journalist Patrícia Campos Mello and Venezuelan outlet Armando.info, in a historic edition of the award that, for the first time, is jointly presented to three emblematic figures and projects in the region’s journalism, as the Gabo Foundation celebrates its 30th anniversary.

The Gabo Foundation’s Governing Council praised her “pioneering work in fact-checking in Latin America and her emblematic efforts against disinformation as a tool of mass manipulation.” From her early days at Chequeado—the Argentine media outlet she led for over a decade—to the creation of LatamChequea, the world’s first regional network of fact-checkers, Laura has inspired hundreds of journalists and become a tireless reference in building journalism grounded in data, rigor, and innovation.

Today, her leadership continues through Factchequeado, the initiative created alongside Chequeado (Argentina) and Maldita.es (Spain) to combat Spanish-language disinformation circulating in the United States, especially affecting Latino communities. Under her direction, Factchequeado has established a collaborative, tech-driven model that not only detects and debunks false narratives, but also trains, equips, and empowers audiences to confront them.

The Gabo Award jury emphasized that “when powerful political, criminal, and economic forces fund an industry of information manipulation, Laura Zommer has made fact-checking her battleground,” and highlighted that her work embodies a “spirit of resistance and ethical commitment that defines good journalism.”

At Factchequeado, we welcome this recognition with great enthusiasm, as it honors not only her professional journey but also the values that guide our daily work: collaboration, innovation, and the belief that journalism can strengthen democracy and improve people’s lives.

Congratulations, Laura!
This award is also an inspiration to those of us who follow your lead and strive to ensure that all communities have access to truthful, reliable, and accessible information.
