Factchequeado has been awarded the Global Fact Checking Award 2025 for Collaboration during GlobalFact12, a prestigious award given by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) of the Poynter Institute that recognizes the best collaborative project of the year worldwide carried out by a fact-checking organization. The award celebrates the joint effort of Factchequeado and its allies during the collaborative coverage of the 2024 U.S. presidential election. This recognition underscores our mission to combat misinformation targeting Latino communities at key moments.
The collaborative coverage included three main components:
8-Hour Live Fact-Checking: A live broadcast in Spanish, produced by Maldita.es in partnership with more than 20 media outlets and NGOs in the US, which aired on November 5 during Election Day to verify information in real time.
Electopedia: An interactive and accessible website that uses prebunking strategies and format experimentation to explain the complex U.S. electoral system, developed with technical support from Chequeado.
Electobot: A WhatsApp chatbot developed in collaboration with elTOQUE that provided real-time answers to users' questions about the electoral process.
This effort was further reinforced by a network of more than 125 partners in 24 states and Puerto Rico, including national media outlets such as Univision and USA TODAY PolitiFact, key local media outlets, and organizations such as the Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas (DDIA). The impact was significant, with more than 30,000 live views and cross-border distribution.
In addition to the collaboration award, the IFCN recognized Laura Zommer, CEO and co-founder of Factchequeado, with the award for her “Outstanding Service to the International Fact-Checking Network.” This award highlights her leadership and essential contribution to strengthening the global fact-checking ecosystem. It was also awarded to Bill Adair, founder of Politifact, and Peter Cunliffe-Jones, founder of Africa Check.
At Factchequeado, we believe that collaboration is not just a strategy, but the only way to truly meet the information needs of Latino communities. We continue to work together to build a more fair, inclusive, and high-quality information ecosystem.
