Would you like to get familiar with open-source investigations or refresh your knowledge of the latest OSINT tools and techniques? Factchequeado, in partnership with the Public Tech Media Lab at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, will offer an intensive OSINT course for journalists, led by Guillén Torres Sepúlveda, an open-source investigations specialist.

It will be offered in Spanish on Tuesday, January 27, and in English on Wednesday, February 4, at 12 pm ET / 9 am PT. It is free, but you will need to register to receive the Zoom link.

This 4-hour online OSINT crash course is designed for journalists looking to get acquainted with open-source investigations or refresh their knowledge of the latest tools and techniques.

The first part of the course (around 3 hours) offers a hands-on introduction to OSINT fundamentals: how information exists and circulates online and how to find it, how to think critically about sources, platforms, and evidence, and how to structure an investigation from a simple question through data collection strategies to produce robust and defensible findings.

The second part of the session (1 hour) moves into advanced practice, with a focus on current investigative tools and workflows for working with images, platforms, and digital data at scale.

The course emphasizes methodology over shortcuts, ethical and safety considerations, and approaches that strengthen investigators’ agency rather than dependency on black-box tools. Whether you’re new to digital investigations or looking to strengthen your foundational practice, no prior technical background is required.
