Factchequeado and Fundación Gabo Lead a Regional Training on AI and Disinformation for Media Leaders in Latin America
The training, organized by Fundación Gabo with the support of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), brought together journalists from Latin America and the Caribbean in Cartagena, Colombia, to strengthen innovative strategies for fact-checking, analyzing misleading narratives, and responsibly using artificial intelligence to combat disinformation.
Factchequeado participated as a leading organization and academic partner in the workshop “Journalism Against Disinformation: Artificial Intelligence, Narratives, and Digital Audiences,” held in Cartagena, Colombia, from April 8 to 10, 2026. The event was organized by Fundación Gabo with the support of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), through the Spanish Cooperation Training Center in Cartagena and as part of the Democracy Program.
The workshop was led by Laura Zommer, co-founder and CEO of Factchequeado, former executive director of Chequeado, and recipient of the 2025 Gabo Award Recognition for Excellence. Over three intensive days, 15 journalists, editors, and media leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean worked on methodologies to combat disinformation through fact-checking, data journalism, analysis of misleading narratives, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence tools.
This is the group of selected journalists:
Enid Patricia López Camacho
Roberto Peixoto
Valeria Faúndez
William José Agudelo Cubillos

Araceli Berenice Martínez Coello
Dirceu Andrés Chávez Quintanilla

Jeanfreddy Gutiérrez
Valentina Gil
Tayli Sánchez Zuñiga
The training combined theoretical sessions, analysis of real-world cases, and hands-on exercises focused on the main challenges facing newsrooms across the region today: the proliferation of manipulated content in text, image, audio, and video formats; the increasing sophistication of disinformation campaigns; and the need to connect with increasingly fragmented digital audiences.
“Combating disinformation requires much more than fact-checking. We need newsrooms capable of understanding how misleading narratives spread, using technology strategically, and building trust-based relationships with audiences. Sharing these tools with colleagues across the region is a way to strengthen the resilience of the Latin American information ecosystem,” said Laura Zommer.
One of the workshop’s central themes was the role of artificial intelligence in journalism. The sessions explored both the opportunities these tools offer to optimize research, monitoring, and verification processes, as well as the ethical and editorial challenges they pose for news organizations.
As part of the program, participants submitted initiatives to apply for financial support aimed at developing journalism projects focused on combating disinformation. The selected proposals received funding and mentorship from the Factchequeado team.
The winning journalists were:
Tayli Sánchez Zuñiga from El Toque — Cuba–United States
Karla Patricia Arévalo from La Astilla — El Salvador
William José Agudelo Cubillos from Versión Pública — Colombia
Enid Patricia López Camacho from Chequea Bolivia — Bolivia
Araceli Berenice Martínez Coello from El Universal — Mexico
Factchequeado’s participation in this initiative adds to its ongoing work in training, research, and capacity-building for journalists, content creators, local media outlets, and community organizations seeking to improve access to verified information for Latino and Spanish-speaking communities.
