Factchequeado has been selected by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) as one of the 25 organizations awarded funding through the SUSTAIN 2026 program, an initiative of the Global Fact Check Fund designed to strengthen the sustainability of media and fact-checking organizations in a global context marked by shrinking funding for journalism and the fight against misinformation.
The USD 30,000 grant will allow Factchequeado to advance a sustainability strategy focused on strengthening direct relationships with its audiences, with the goal of building a community of subscribers and individual donors who contribute to sustaining access to verified information in Spanish for Latino communities in the United States.
“Over the years, we have built something extremely valuable: the trust of our audiences and a distribution network that reaches millions of people through media outlets, community organizations, and digital platforms. We believe this support will allow us to take the next step: developing the infrastructure needed to turn that trust into an engaged community of subscribers and donors that can help sustain our work over the long term,” said Laura Zommer, co-founder and CEO of Factchequeado.
To build a community that contributes to sustainability, Factchequeado will bring together fundraising experts in the United States, implement new tools for newsletter and donor management, develop segmentation and automation processes, and strengthen its internal capacities to sustain the model over time.
The strategy aims to transform anonymous readers into identified users, active members, and recurring donors. The goal is to reduce dependence on short-term funding sources and create a more stable support base for fact-checking journalism.
IFCN Director Angie Drobnic Holan highlighted that the selected organizations continue to innovate despite a challenging financial environment for fact-checking organizations worldwide. “They are finding ways to serve their audiences at a time when high-quality information is becoming increasingly difficult to find,” she said when announcing the results of the call for applications.
In addition to strengthening sustainability, the organization hopes that the lessons learned through this process can serve as a reference for its more than 145 partners, as well as for other media outlets and information projects working in service of historically underserved communities.
Factchequeado is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization with 501(c)(3) status that closes the Spanish-language information gap for more than 68 million Latinos. We expand access to verified and relevant content while strengthening Spanish-language media by fostering innovation, collaboration, and community-driven solutions.
