What do a soccer tournament in Chicago, a gathering of street vendors in San Francisco, and a meeting of retired adults in Puerto Rico have in common?
All of them will serve as settings for events that Factchequeado will co-organize with 12 of our more than 145 partners to discuss artificial intelligence (AI) and test FactDesafIA, the first Spanish-language WhatsApp course designed to help people learn how to use AI responsibly and safely.
The 12 organizations responded to the call for applications for the Funds for Community Conversations and Trainings on AI in Latino Communities and were selected for the diversity and innovation of their proposals, as well as their ability to connect the conversation about AI with the challenges faced daily by the communities they serve.
Through these community events, we aim to test FactDesafIA live and receive direct feedback on how people interact with the course, what they learn, and how we can improve and scale the tool.
AI is already part of everyday life for millions of people. It is present when someone receives a manipulated video on social media, uses technological tools —such as chatbots— to solve everyday problems, or tries to identify a digital scam. However, many Latino communities still have few opportunities to talk about these issues in accessible spaces, in Spanish, and from their own lived experiences.
“The selected proposals show that artificial intelligence is not a topic detached from everyday life. It is present when a person tries to identify a scam, participate in an election, understand a public policy, protect their business, or verify the information they receive on their phone. We want these conversations to happen in the spaces where communities already gather, learn, and build trust,” said Dulce Ramos, Factchequeado’s head of partnerships and communications.
The selected projects reflect the diversity of needs within Latino communities. There will be gatherings for migrant women on civic participation in Philadelphia; soccer tournaments with media literacy training in Chicago; workshops for older adults to learn how to identify digital fraud in San Juan, Puerto Rico; and youth-led media literacy activities in Reno.
The winning organizations will also offer spaces to strengthen community dialogue, discuss information consumption habits, and combat mis- and disinformation in Atlanta, New York, Phoenix, and Seattle; digital security trainings for street vendors in San Francisco; conversations about electoral processes in Nogales, taxes and civic participation in Miami; as well as activities to recognize and address climate mis- and disinformation in Boulder.
The selected organizations are:
Centro Integral de la Mujer Madre Tierra (Pennsylvania)
WNIJ Hola (Illinois)
La Onda KNUV 1190 AM/KRPH 99.5 FM and Pendiente mi Gente (Arizona)
Noticiero Móvil (Nevada)
Reinterpretar (New York)
9 Millones (Puerto Rico)
PRENSA ATLANTA (Georgia)
elTOQUE / Más Voces Foundation, Inc. (Florida)
Acción Latina – El Tecolote (California)
Se Habla Media, in collaboration with the Consulate of Mexico in Seattle (Washington)
Conecta Arizona (Arizona)
GreenLatinos (National)
The events will take place between July and September 2026 and will bring together community members, community leaders, local organizations, educators, and journalists.
“With this initiative, supported by the Patrick McGovern Foundation, we seek to foster conversations that respond to the real concerns of Hispanic communities living in the United States, bringing them tools to understand how artificial intelligence increasingly influences the information we consume, the decisions we make, and our participation in public life,” said Laura Zommer, CEO and co-founder of Factchequeado.
