Factchequeado has received a grant awarded by the ABIM Foundation to combat medical disinformation. The prize, endowed with $80,000, will allow Factchequeado to strengthen its current line of work dedicated to verifying information and refuting incorrect information on health topics by increasing our capacity to produce more and enhanced content, not only for our website but also for our partners, social networks and other platforms.
Factchequeado was awarded the grant by the ABIM Foundation with the aim of dedicating increased resources to the development of a project combating medical disinformation with a special focus on content that circulates on WhatsApp. This award will additionally help us deepen the development of our WhatsApp chatbot to which anyone can write with their questions. Through the chatbot we are able to learn first-hand about requests for information from the different US Latino communities, who, according to the data, predominantly use WhatsApp to consume and share news. A 2021 Nielsen report finds that Hispanics are 57% more likely to use social media as their primary source of information about COVID-19, and Hispanic young adults are more than twice as likely as the general population to use messaging apps like WhatsApp.
The ABIM Foundation’s mission is to advance medical professionalism to improve the health care system by collaborating with physicians and physician leaders, medical trainees, health care delivery systems, payers, policymakers, consumer organizations and patients to foster a shared understanding of professionalism and how they can adopt the tenets of professionalism in practice.
