Factchequeado receives support from the National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM) to launch a pilot project to promote the verification of health and public health data in Spanish in the United States, in conjunction with different media and allied organizations.
From January to August 2023, and with a support of USD 10,000, Factchequeado will produce journalistic content with a video focus throughout each month to verify misinformation and provide data and context on the main public health, medical care news and its implications. for Latino communities.
Spanish-speaking communities in the United States are especially vulnerable to misinformation in general, and misinformation related to health and science in particular. For example, a Morning Consult survey shows that WhatsApp usage in Latino communities reaches 47%, while the American average is only 24%. In addition, 56% of them say they use this app to get information. There is also evidence that, in the past, misinformation about health care and public health issues was created specifically to target and influence Latinos. For example, that vaccination centers during the COVID-19 pandemic functioned as a trap to deport immigrants, that Carnation evaporated milk and goat milk are a substitute for formula milk, or that there are safe and effective herbal methods for abortion.
In this line, and to effectively reach these communities, the initiative will have the collaboration of more than 25 local allied media of Factchequeado that will share the content through the main online channels, such as WhatsApp and social networks.
