Factchequeado, in collaboration with PEN America, is committed to strengthening fact-checking capabilities in Spanish among journalists and media outlets.
Our initiative aims to expand the community of journalists serving Latino communities and combating misinformation in Spanish by providing training in fact-checking tools. To achieve this, we will continue and enhance our weekly meeting series, El Cafecito, which since April 2022 has brought together media partners and civil society organizations to share misleading narratives reported by our communities. The sessions also provide tools for detecting misinformation and equip participants with resources to verify and disseminate accurate Spanish-language content. We are prioritizing areas like the Miami/Florida metropolitan area, the Dallas-Fort Worth/Texas metropolitan area, and the Phoenix/Arizona metropolitan area.
We will also produce more bilingual content (Spanish and English) to facilitate distribution among radio stations in Florida, aiming to increase the reach and impact of Factchequeado's content. Existing Factchequeado materials will be adapted into English, and we will collaborate with local media networks and associations to support distribution. Additionally, a feedback system will be established to gather input from radio stations and target audiences, with a focus on the Miami metropolitan area.
This year, we will develop and launch a media literacy course via WhatsApp to introduce Latino and Spanish-speaking audiences to fundamental concepts such as identifying misinformation and distinguishing between facts and opinions. This 7-day course will feature short lessons and focus on strategically significant areas nationwide.
