At Factchequeado, we are pleased to announce that during the second half of 2023, Open Society Foundations (OSF) awarded us a grant of $250,000 to advance our mission of combating misinformation affecting Latino communities in the United States.
Thanks to this support, we will be able to strengthen the following key initiatives:
Expansion of our Collaborative Network:
We will reach media partners in 11 priority states ahead of the 2024 presidential elections: Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Georgia, Arizona, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Texas, California, Florida, and New York.
We will provide these partners with alerts and original content designed to counter trends of misinformation in Spanish. This material will be free for publication and accompanied by training and mentorship on effectively connecting with Latino communities.
New Workflow and Peer Learning Among Partners:
We will implement a new approach to better serve and engage with Latino communities locally. We will foster peer learning through weekly meetings called "El Cafecito," offering a space for exchange, collaboration, and mutual strengthening.
Training for Key Stakeholders in the Fight Against Misinformation:
We will design and deliver workshops for journalists, edu-influencers (educational content influencers), community leaders, and educators to enhance their capacity to combat Spanish-language misinformation.
Media Literacy and Technology Use Activities:
We will develop media literacy initiatives targeting Latino communities through training sessions and our WhatsApp chatbot at +1 (646) 873-6087. This effort aims to provide access to high-quality, independent news in Spanish while fostering critical thinking and resilience against misinformation.
Thanks to OSF’s support in 2024, we will strengthen our partnerships and expand our actions to fight misinformation in Hispanic communities.
