Factchequeado held its first in-person event, titled "The truth is nonpartisan: Spanish-language media and community organizations fact-checking the 2024 elections, in collaboration with FIU's Department of Journalism and Media at the Key Biscayne campus, PEN America, and the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ).

The gathering brought together 50 members of Spanish-language media, community organizations, and fact-checking experts to address the challenges of misinformation during the presidential elections. Key speakers from Pew Research Center, The Washington Post, Conexión Migrante, Univisión's El Detector, Telemundo News Digital, Proof News, DDIA, GALEO, Climate Power, and NYU, among others, contributed their insights.

The comprehensive agenda included discussions on innovative fact-checking tools, interactive sessions with industry experts on data, artificial intelligence, social media, and politics. The highlight was a creative "Memeathon," which brought together over 25 Spanish and bilingual Latino media outlets and community organizations nationwide to creatively tackle and respond to the most prevalent election-related misinformation narratives.

Laura Zommer, co-founder and CEO of Factchequeado, emphasized the significance of meeting in person: "In a moment when misinformation threatens the integrity of our democratic processes, this gathering offers a unique opportunity to unite forces. Bringing together media, community organizations, and experts allowed us to develop more effective strategies to combat misinformation in Spanish and empower the Latino community with reliable information as elections approach."

Holding this event in person, just weeks before the elections, underscored the importance of direct, transparent, and collaborative dialogue among key players. In a decisive year for the country’s democratic future, the event provided an opportunity to address misleading narratives affecting communities, generating accessible strategies to ensure voters have verified and useful information during this critical time.
